I was curious about why they specifically use lotus flowers. I asked the monk and he shared that the lotus flower is an important symbol in Buddhism, representing purity and enlightenment, because it blooms beautifully even in muddy water... I find this explanation so beautiful! While looking around the temple, I noticed that there was always a small paper with some sentences written on it. When I asked about it, they explained that the participants often write wishes or messages of hope on the petals of the lanterns.
The monk explained that making these lanterns has been part of Korean culture and traditions for hundreds of years. It is a way for people to celebrate Buddha’s Birthday, one of the most important holidays in Buddhism. The lanterns represent the light of wisdom, showing people the way to happiness and peace. It’s like lighting a little candle in the dark - it gives hope and guides people.
Making lanterns is also a way for the community to come together. Families, friends, and even tourists from other countries can join in to make lanterns and write their wishes. The monk told me that this activity is a beautiful way to share kindness and connect with others through this activity. People of all ages can participate, from children to grandparents, making it a fun and meaningful tradition for everyone.
The Lotus Lantern Festival is usually held every May so I couldn't attend it, unfortunately. Thankfully, people can make them throughout the year and during this festival, all these lanterns are lit up at once!
