The Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Where does it live?:

The loggerhead sea turtle lives all over the world. You can find it in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Mediterranean Oceans! In fact, the loggerhead sea turtle has the widest distribution of any sea turtle in the world! The majority can be found on the eastern coast of North America, from Massachusetts down to Mexico. It is rare to see these turtles in Europe and Africa, but they are much more common throughout the Canary Islands. Usually, these turtles spend their lives in the open ocean, just like Squirt and Crush from Finding Nemo! Sometimes, we are lucky enough to have the sea turtles come close to the shore to see them in person.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The loggerhead sea turtle spends nearly its entire life in the ocean. The only time the turtles come to the beach is when the females are ready to lay their eggs. The turtle's four large flippers help it swim efficiently in the ocean. This way, it can avoid predators such as sharks and seals. They also use these strong flippers to chase down slow-moving prey. The loggerhead sea turtle's favorite meal is jellyfish, but they also feed on invertebrates such as starfish and clams.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Many things can harm the loggerhead sea turtle. As a hatchling, these turtles have many more predators such as crabs and foxes. As adults, they have far fewer natural predators, but they are still susceptible to human activity. Speeding boats and ocean pollution are two threats that loggerhead sea turtles face from humans.
