Ocean noise can also be a threat to Minke whales. Because they use low-frequency sounds to communicate with one another, ocean noise from ships can confuse them.
Vessel strikes are also a risk to Minke whales. Luckily in the Antarctic, there aren’t too many ships so Minke whales are less likely to be hit. However, there is still this risk when they migrate. They also have to be careful of being hit in Antarctic waters, which might increase if too many ships start visiting Antarctica.
