Hello there, curious minds! Remember when we talked a little about Ramadan? Well, let's look a little closer at this fascinating tradition that is celebrated by close to two billion people around the world every year. Perhaps even some of your classmates or friends are included in that number. Join me in exploring Ramadan and its customs and discover why it's such a special time for so many families.
1400 years ago (give or take a few years) marks the beginning of the first Ramadan. It is a special month where Muslims fast from pre-dawn until sunset. During this time, they focus on being kind, giving to others and remembering to be grateful.
How many of you have a Muslim friend or know a Muslim who celebrates Ramadan? Did you ever sit with them as they were having Iftar (the meal at sunset to break the fast)? If you have, then perhaps you know that it is a special time when they remember and honor when the Quran, their holy book, was first revealed to their Prophet Muhammad. It's a time for self-discipline, kindness and being grateful for what they have, similar to how you wait for your birthday or maybe Christmas, Muslims eagerly wait for Ramadan every year because it brings them closer to their faith and to each other.
