Somos Personas También

Last weekend, I traveled to Salamanca where the local church was organizing many events to bring awareness to this need. The main slogan was "nadie sin hogar" (no one without a home) and we saw many signs saying things like "hazme visible" (make me visible). So often, we ignore those around us who are homeless or asking for money. For some reason, we see them as below us and strip them of their humanity. We subconsciously tell ourselves that they did something deserving of that position, but we actually know very little about their lives. If we don't face these people as fellow humans who are going through tough times and are deserving of kindness and sympathy, our own humanity begins to decline and this need will never be met. I like seeing how more and more conversations are being started about helping the homeless, but we definitely have far to go.
