Castañas

Introduction:

While I love living in and walking around the city of Ourense, I also try to get out of the city every week or so to explore. You can walk for just twenty minutes and reach a small pueblo, or town, in the mountains surrounding the city. This allows for many beautiful walks and hikes not far from Ourense. I also enjoy finding the random parks scattered within the city.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

One of the trees that is very common to see around this area is the chestnut tree. These trees are beautiful, but they're not usually the largest trees you see. The chestnuts they grow have a prickly shell with the chestnuts hidden inside.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

Chestnut trees are beautiful and very common to see in parks within the city. One of my favorite things to do when the weather is nice is to sit out in a local park and read or hang out with friends. But be careful when you are near these trees on a windy day, because the chestnuts are easily knocked off the trees. When they land on the ground they crack open, but they also do the same when they land on you and are likely to leave you with a bruise.

Where does it live?:

Chestnut trees are usually found in the Northern hemisphere, in fairly wet climates with sedimentary soil. Galicia is a perfect place for these trees.
