Humans and the Environment

Introduction:

When you eat an apple, do you wonder where it was grown? Or do you ever find yourself wanting to play outside among the grass and the trees? Here in La Rioja, local produce is plentiful and there are many open spaces in nature to explore. Logroño is a unique city because it is located close to beautiful and healthy natural environments!

What makes this environment special or different?:

Logroño is the capital city of La Rioja. It is full of man-made structures like roads, buildings, bridges and cars. However, just outside of the city, there are a lot of natural resources like rivers, trees and fertile land for growing crops. People who live in the city still rely on natural resources for important things like food and water. For example, olive trees, grapevines and pear trees grow on the outskirts of the city. This is special because it means that people who live in the city have access to fresh, local fruit and vegetables. When fruit and vegetables are grown locally, more people have the opportunity to enjoy them. For example, every Wednesday, my school serves free fruit from nearby farms to the students at snack time!

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

La Rioja is surrounded by massive mountains that protect the land from harsh weather conditions like heavy rain or strong wind.
