My name is Florencia Hinojosa, but people call me "Flor."
In the city, the house is antique with tall windows and doors. I live with two other people, but the house has about seven or eight rooms. Vilma, a Quechua-Tehuelche woman about 65 or 70 years old, is the owner of the home. She offers up her casa for Indigenous sisters travelling from other provinces, who might need a space to stay in the city. With Vilma, we form part of a movement of Indigenous women organizing together to respect and protect life.
I sought refuge on the island for one year during the pandemic in a big cabin made of wood and bamboo rods. Through big windows, you can look out and see all the trees and the surrounding river. There is a dock and a small beach area. Many little animals roam around the land. One big difference that sets apart the cabin on the island from the house in the city is that it is built high off the ground. When the river rises, the house stays nice and dry. I’m living here again through March.
