While India is known for its spicy curries and rice dishes, South India is also known for its tropical fruits and breakfast dishes. I'm going to tell you a little bit about a few of these.
South Indian breakfast food is very different from American breakfast food. Known as "tiffins," these breakfast foods are almost never sweet. They are often eaten with sauces called chutney and are very diverse. One example of a tiffin is idli, a steamed rice cake that can be eaten with chutney or sambar (a vegetable soup). I often eat idli for breakfast!
The fruits in India are also delicious! There are many fruits here that are difficult to find in the United States. I talked about sitaphals (custard apple) before, but there are also munjalu (palm fruit) and mangoes. Sometimes you can find mangoes in the United States, but they don't compare to the ones in India!
I really enjoyed the idli even though it isn't similar to anything from the United States. When I looked at the sitaphals and munjalus, I was a little wary since I had never seen a fruit that looked like that before. Now they're my favorite fruits!
