Since the carnival was in a rural area, it mostly had adults who were participating in different gambling games like dice, roulette, and others, so we didn't stay for very long.
Usually, we would have gone to my grandparents' home village, where they have village-wide functions with lots of food and animals, but we weren't able to go this year. These functions are very colorful with lawn games like horseshoes and darts, and performances like dances and singing. Most people spend Sankranti by going to their home village so they get to spend the festival with all of their family.
The community celebrates this festival to honor the Sun God, Surya, the end of winter and the harvest.
This time marks when many winter crops such as wheat, barley, mustard, and peas are ready to be harvested across India. Most people in India eat their lunch and dinner with rice or roti (Indian flatbread), so the harvest provides a staple crop to Indians.
