Lunch is the biggest meal in the Czech Republic, while breakfast and dinner are light snacks. For breakfast or dinner, you might eat a slice of bread with cheese and butter or an egg. But lunch is the meal with meat and potatoes and vegetables. Since most people are at school or work during lunchtime, the cafeteria makes sure your lunch is very special.
In the cafeteria at school, I get to try a lot of tasty Czech foods, such as dumplings. A dumpling can come in all different shapes, sizes and flavors. It's a type of dough or bread that you can boil in water, fry in a pan or bake in the oven. People all over the world eat dumplings in different ways, even in the United States. They fill them with meat or vegetables or fruit. Sometimes there is nothing inside them at all.
When I walked into the cafeteria on Wednesday I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Giant puffy white bread covered in a creamy purple sauce and sugar. Dessert for lunch? My mom would not be very happy with what I was about to eat, but it did look really tasty.
I sat down with my plate and my mouth started to water. I could smell that the purple sauce was actually blueberry cream. I picked up my knife and cut down the middle of the dumpling. Hot steam rose out of the bread. I could see there was fruit inside.
