Berlin is a very international city. Even though Berlin is in Germany, when I walk down the street I hear many languages besides German. I hear German, English, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic and many more. I started to wonder, “Why are there people from so many different countries living in Berlin?”
I learned that one of the reasons that there are people from so many different countries in Berlin is that it contains a lot of immigrants and refugees. When people leave their home country because it is unsafe, they are called refugees. Often, refugees need help when they get to a new country. They might not have a lot of money or the money they did have, they spent moving their family to safety. Because of this, Germany needs to reach out to help these families.
Syria, a country in the Middle East (between Europe and Africa), has been in civil war since 2011. This makes it very difficult for families to continue living there. In fact, 13 million people in Syria need to find somewhere safe to live. In response, the Chancellor (similar to a President) of Germany, Angela Merkel, welcomed these families to Germany.
