Hello, young explorers!
I only have three more days left aboard the JOIDES Resolution, which is so crazy! It feels like just yesterday that I got on the ship to sail from Spain to Greece. Soon, we'll get off the ship in Heraklion, which is the largest city on the Greek island of Crete. Can you find Santorini and Crete on a map?
I'm sad that my adventure is coming to an end, but I'm also so, so excited to get back on land. Two months is a long time without going on a hike, hugging your parents, or eating at your favorite resturant. As I pack my things and prepare for the end of this adventure, I've been thinking about three of my favorite things I learned at sea. Let me tell you what they are:
1. Volcanoes produce more than just lava!
I learned a lot about the types of things that come out of volcanoes when they explode. You're probably familiar with slow-moving lava flows that bubble up from inside and slide down the edges of volcanoes. This kind of erruption happened recently on the island of Hawai'i when the Mauna Loa volcano produced lava from November to December 2022.
But volcanoes also spit out hot gas, ash, and a special type of rock called pumice.
