This week, I am going to share a field note about the transportation systems around Tenerife and the Canary Islands. Although Tenerife is a small island, it is very well-developed and has an intricate system of buses, trams, ferries and even planes! The transportation systems around the Canary Islands help keep all eight islands well-connected. You will see many similarities and differences between our transportation systems in the United States. Let us take a look and see how the people of Tenerife get around on a daily basis!
On the island of Tenerife, there is a public transportation system called Titsa. Titsa consists of buses (guaguas) and trams (tranvias). Hundreds of buses service nearly every part of the island, no matter how small! The buses are very popular and inexpensive, too. A bus ride within the capital city costs about 50 cents, while a bus ride across the island costs about nine dollars. If you are a resident of Tenerife, however, public transportation is free, making it a great option for anyone who calls Tenerife home.
The trams, however, are great for traveling within the larger cities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The tram line stretches from the intercambiador (local transport interchange) to the island's northern airport, nearly ten miles away.
