Hi class! I am so excited to share the most important festival that my region of Cajamarca has. It is a week long party with lots of colors, paint, and water balloons!
I learned about the tradition of Carnival. It is celebrated in all regions of Peru, but the home of carnival is in Cajamarca, which is where I live! People come from all over the country to eat, drink, and paint the city with a bunch of different colors! It lasts for a week, and usually starts with a ‘paint day’ where people fill up water balloons of paint and throw them at each other. They also use water guns and buckets to paint people!
The community has a carnival every year to celebrate different traditions that people have! It is a time to see your family and spend time with your community. Each community makes a float for the parade, and has a queen of their district.
Carnival is famous for the drink chicha, which is made with corn. The environment of Cajamarca is great for growing corn, so they eat it a lot. In the parade, my job was to serve chicha to all of the people who were watching!
