Peru's Favorite Food: Cuy!

Introduction:

In Peru, there are many different kinds of fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains that people eat! Cuy is a food that all Peruvians know, and now you get to learn about it!

What food did I try?:

The food I tried in Peru was Cuy. Cuy is an animal that people eat, similar to cows, chickens, and pigs. Cuy is a type of rodent. Can you think of other animals that are rodents? If you guessed hamsters, rats, or squirrels, you are correct!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When I tried cuy for the first time, it tasted better than I thought it would. It tasted kind of like chicken. It is a dish that is usually deep-fried. Cuy is prepared in a way so that you get a whole leg, just like a chicken drumstick. Except cuy is different from chicken - the foot is usually still on the leg when you eat it!

How is the food prepared?:

In Peru, most people raise cuy in their houses. When they are ready to eat a cuy, they prepare it right in the house! Usually, people in Peru eat cuy with rice, potatoes, vegetables, and a special sauce called rocoto. It’s spicy!

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Peruvians have been eating cuy for thousands of years, even before Christopher Columbus sailed to America!
