Here in Bucaramanga, and in the whole country of Colombia, the main language is Spanish (more than 99% of people here speak it!).
In Bucaramanga, we use the Colombian peso. One U.S. dollar is about 3,000 pesos! They have coins that go down to 50 pesos, which is worth less than one penny.
A bottle of water costs about 2,000 pesos or 60 cents.
This week for breakfast I treated myself to a famous donut place in Bucaramanga. Here in Colombia, donuts are not a breakfast food, they are eaten in the afternoon. A lot of people think if you eat sweets for breakfast, you will get a tummy ache, so the breakfast food here is very plain. My donut had arequipe (pronounced ar-eh-kee-pay) inside of it, which is like dulce de leche or caramelized milk. I will be sure to get a picture of it next time!
This week I listened to vallenato (pronounced bye-en-ah-toe) a lot! Vallenato literally translates to "from the valley," for good reason because it is from Valledupar, which is a city in the valley of Colombia. It is a type of Colombian folk music.
