Buses are a common mode of transportation among Costa Ricans, as buses offer a cheap and reliable way to get from one place to another. It rains a lot in Costa Rica, and the bus drivers are very experienced in driving through all sorts of weather!
People get around mainly by car and bus, here. In the major cities, it is very common for people to use the bus system. There tends to be a lot of traffic in the main cities, and many of the locals do not abide by the traffic laws! Many drivers don't come to a complete stop at a red light, or they ignore the stop sign altogether. Additionally, there are many potholes and the roads aren't as well maintained. These two factors make it pretty difficult and dangerous to drive around town!
I found it very useful to use public transportation and the bus system to get from place to place in Costa Rica. It was very easy to navigate bus routes and stations, as these were located in many places throughout the city. The bus fare was cheap, and I felt safe while riding in the bus. I would take a bus from Cartago to Jaco Beach almost every weekend. This bus ride would take about two hours one way.
