I have always been interested in informative, interpretive artwork that tries to explain a process or habitat or simply gives attention to a subject in nature. Examples can be found all around us in books, encyclopedias, magazines and interpretive signs.
Where do you work?
After traveling for school and work, I now live in Ukiah, CA, close to where I grew up, and I have found many opportunities working locally. My work is all nature-based. I try to do one public art project each year, usually a mural in a public space or school. I am mindful of the natural history and ecology of the areas where these works are displayed, so I aim to showcase native flora and fauna. I also love to create paintings on canvas, and I always have a piece in progress at home and look for opportunities to share my artwork in galleries and businesses.
I am fortunate to work as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. I obtain work through commissions from my local city, referred clients, and those who find my work online through Instagram or my website. I am also fortunate to have worked for many years for a San Francisco Bay Area-based studio called Ink Dwell. Ink Dwell creates public installations, fine art, environmental campaigns and science illustration that explore the beauty and complexity of nature.
What is your job title?
Depending on the project, I am an illustrator, graphic designer, muralist and fine artist.
Have you always wanted to work as a scientific illustrator? Can you tell us about your journey to this career path?
Art and science have always formed the core of my interests.
