Just like Baba Marta, it is a way to welcome warmer weather and say goodbye to the cold. Can you think of any other traditions that remind you of Baba Marta?
The tradition is all about celebrating new beginnings and wishing everyone good health, happiness, and protection for the year ahead. It is also a fun occasion to make or buy martenitsi (bracelets) while taking a moment to appreciate one another and becoming closer as a community. In a special way, this tradition helps people slow down and connect with each other, reminding us to value the people around us and appreciate the little moments in life. It is a great chance to step away from our busy everyday routines, reflect on how quickly time passes and remember how important each day truly is!
This tradition is really connected to its environment! It is not just about celebrating the changing seasons, but it is also about honoring nature. One special part of the Baba Marta tradition is that after wearing the martenitsi bracelets given to you by friends and family, you keep them on until you see the first stork (a type of big white bird) of the season. When you spot the stork, you take one of your bracelets and tie it to the first tree you see. People believe this brings good luck to the tree, helping it bloom and grow healthy in the spring!
This tradition has made me think about how important it is to take time and appreciate the nature around us—like the trees, sky, leaves, flowers and birds.
