Meet the One and Only Female Helicopter Pilot in Nepal

Everyone used to come home and ask, “Why are you educating your daughters? They’re going to get married and go away anyways.” So it was because of my mom that we all got an equal education. One of my sisters teaches and runs a school, and another younger sister is a housewife, but she does a bunch of other stuff, too. The other two sisters both live in Australia. One of them is married with two twin daughters, and the other has her Masters degree in engineering and she’s working on another degree. My mom met and fell in love with my dad while she was in school. When I was little, she worked in a government office, but nowadays she doesn’t work. My dad has always done really hard work in the transportation business.

How do you get around?:

I’m not really a car person. I actually like walking or cycling around. If I have to go somewhere, I prefer to go and walk. If not, then I do Tootle. It’s an app where you choose a pickup point and drop-off point, and then a motorbike will call you and pick you up. If not that, then I have a scooter. I’m not a fancy person. I don’t go around in a car. I have normal things...nothing fancy.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

If you meet me, you’ll meet me in very dirty clothes. I’m kind of tomboy-ish. I used to be that girl with nail polish and makeup, but now I’m like “Nah, that’s not me.” I have bags of clothes with tags. Each time I open up my luggage, I take one piece out and wear it, but I don’t have time to go out and dress up. Most of the time I’m in Lukla, or in the off-season, I’ll be in Simikot. I wear the blue helicopter jumpers a lot; the flight suit that I have with my thermal coats.
