Meet the One and Only Female Helicopter Pilot in Nepal

Introduction:

During brunch with Priya Adhikari on her day off, she told me a bit about her personal and professional lives. Let's learn more about her family, hobbies and career as a helicopter pilot in Nepal.

What is your full name?:

My name is Priya Adhikari. That’s (P)apa R)omeo (I)ndia (Y)ankee (A)lpha for my first name, and (A)lpha (D)elta (H)otel (I)ndia (K)ilo (A)lpha (R)omeo (I)ndia for my last name.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

I live in Kathmandu with my mom. Right now my dad is in Australia, so it's just the two of us. It’s an old house my parents built about 32 years ago. Since then I’ve renovated it to have a gas stove, hot water and Western-style toilets. The house has two floors. My bedroom and the kitchen on the second floor, my parent’s bedroom and the living room on the first floor, and we rent out the ground floor rooms.

What is your family like?:

There’s my mom, dad and four other sisters. My dad likes to say he has “four daughters and one son” because I stay home and take care of them. They kept having more kids, trying to have a son, but they only ever had daughters. It’s not like that anymore, but to have five daughters and educate them equally like a son used to be a big deal.
