Kids are in charge of cleaning their rooms, tidying their beds, and doing their homework every night. While kids in the Amazons also have to complete their homework every night, they too have many different chores from kids in Bogotá. For example, they often have to buy groceries for their family, as well as take care of farm animals and pets.
What jobs does a typical Colombian kids’ parents have?:
Most parents in Bogotá work in various service jobs in the city or neighborhood. However, Bogotá is a huge city like NYC, and as a result, there are a huge variety of jobs. Some typical food industry jobs that parents work in are at restaurants or cafes as waiters, cooks, bakers and more. Others may work in public service jobs as policemen or in private service jobs like finance as bankers. In contrast, since the Amazons are mostly rural or farm communities, people tend to work in jobs where they are directly providing for their families. For example, many people in the Amazons work as farmers or fishermen.
What time does school start, and what time does a typical Colombian kid go home?:
School follows a similar schedule in both Bogotá and the Amazons.
Students start school around 8:00 am and usually go until 11:00 am or 12:00 pm. After that, young students from 3rd grade or below are typically finished with school, though older students from 4th grade and above usually just have a break for lunch. Older students then have an afternoon session, from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Most students will then take a bus or walk home, and arrive home around 4:00 pm.
