The Life of an Eight Year Old in Chennai

Introduction:

I spent time with an eight year old boy named Adhvik and asked him a few questions about what his typical day looks like. Adhvik was born in Chennai, and he has lived there his whole life.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

"For breakfast, I eat either idli or dosa with chutney and watermelon juice.

For lunch, I eat fried rice with almonds, cashews and fruits. My favorite fruit is papaya.

When I come back home from school, I eat a snack. Usually my snack is chocolate ice cream, chips or a samosa.

For dinner, I usually have white rice with sambar and vegetables."

Notes: Idlis are steamed rice cakes. Dosas are thin, savoury crepes or pancakes made from a batter that is made from rice and lentils. Samosas are deep fried dumplings stuffed with a spicy potato filling. Sambar is a spicy lentil stew. Chutney is a spread made from ground up coconut, herbs and chilis.

What is your house like?:

"I live in a flat with my Amma, Appa and two Paatis. I share a room with one of my Paatis. I have lots of friends my age in my building. We play outside every day. I like that my room has a rainbow and stars on the walls."
