Tamil Nadu

A lot of historic temples in Tamil Nadu that are hundreds of years old have tanks like this. Built hundreds of years ago, these tanks show how people in Tamil Nadu have learned to manage water wisely. One example of a historic temple with a temple tank is the Kapaleeshwar Temple in Chennai.

People in Tamil Nadu have adapted to the environment in other ways too. Some homes have solar panels to use sunlight for electricity. Fishermen check weather reports before going to sea to stay safe from storms. Many people grow trees to stop soil from washing away. An example of how trees prevent soil from washing away is the Pichavaram Mangrove Forest near Pondicherry, where the tangled roots hold the soil in place and protect coastal villages from erosion, storms and flooding. Many conservation efforts focus on replanting mangroves to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s coastline and support local communities. Scientists and farmers are also working together to find crops that can survive with less water. Tamil Nadu’s people have learned to live with nature, making changes to keep their land and homes safe for the future!
