My Daily Life in Chetumal

Photos

Last semester, I took a Maya language class at the UQROO! It was really difficult, but it is so cool to see indigenous languages taught in schools
Sometimes during the week or on the weekends, I take a quick 15-minute cab ride to Calderitas to go to the beach and eat the best empanadas around!
In Chetumal, I have access to some of the freshest fruit I have seen in my life! Almost every week, I try to go to the fruitería to buy mangos, passionfruit, limes, pineapples and other tropical fruits
This is the view from my apartment, where I am lucky enough to live only 10 minutes from the University and from the water
Every week, I teach 12-16 conversation circles, where I help students to improve their conversational English. In this circle, we worked on reviewing restaurants in one of my advanced classes
This is where you can find me whenever I am in my apartment! I do all my lesson planning, relaxing and sleeping in my hammock :) Most people in this area of Mexico sleep in hammocks instead of beds
I cook most of my meals here, and making tortillas and empanadas from scratch is actually a lot simpler than it seems. This is the tortilla press, used to make tortillas round and thin
After pressing the dough in the tortilla press, you stuff the dough with your desired filling (usually meat) and then fry it until golden brown
