How was the weather this week?:

We went into a storm system early in the week, bringing cloudy, rainy days and high winds that resulted in 20 foot waves! The last couple of days has been mainly sunny with pleasant temperatures. The southern Atlantic Ocean is known for being pretty stormy, so any sunny days with low winds are a bonus.

What animals did I see this week? :

We saw Cape fur seals, plenty of sea birds and even some penguins as we left Cape Town and journeyed out into the ocean. I'm keeping my eye out for whales!

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

As the JOIDES Resolution was leaving Cape Town, I saw a Cape fur seal waving its fin at us! It really felt like this playful seal was waving goodbye and wishing us a successful voyage.

Other Nature News from this week:

As we traveled across the ocean, I had the chance to look at sediment cores from a previous expedition. These sediments came from the bottom of the ocean and were more than 40 million yeards old.
