Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

The JOIDES Resolution traveled (slowly but surely) nearly 2,000 miles from Cape Town to our first drilling site. We are now right in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, a little closer to South America than we are to Africa.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

In total, I have traveled more than 8,000 miles on this adventure so far. There's still a long way to go! Want to learn more about my "Amazing Journey to the Starting Line"? Click here!

How did I get around this week?:

For the next several weeks, all of my travel will be by ship.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

We crossed the Atlantic Mid Ocean Ridge, which is part of the longest mountain range in the world. All of the mountains, however, are at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, so it is only by plotting our location on a map that we know where the ship is in relationship to what's far below us.

Other Travel News from this week:

We finally reached the first drilling site on June 19th and started to drill and obtained some hard igneous rocks.  However, before we reached our first drill site, we crossed the Atlantic Mid Ocean Ridge.
