Want to avoid traffic jams while having fun and taking care of the environment? Consider riding a bike to your destination! This is what people in Quebec City do, especially in the Old Town (central part of the city). It is easier to make this transportation choice in Quebec City because of the conveniently located bike stations dotted around the city.
As I mentioned in one of my previous notes, Canadians, in general, are more aware of the effects of their lifestyle on the environment. For this reason, many times they try to choose environmentally friendly ways of getting around. Since the city government is aware of this stance, in Quebec City, the government-run RTC transportation system created a bike-sharing program called àVélo ("by bike" in French).
The creation of this system makes it convenient for people to move around the city and rent a bike wherever they want to go in the city. They can either get a yearly or monthly membership to more easily budget their rides. They also have the option of paying for each ride, but this quickly becomes much more expensive than signing up for the long-term memberships.
