Shanghai’s Environment

The average apartment building has about 27 floors and each floor has four different apartments. They have to build apartments this way because so much of the natural environment is already destroyed that building upwards is the only option. Shanghai is such a bustling city that the few parks that they do have are relatively small, such as Washington Square Park in New York City or Klyde Warren Park in Dallas. There is not a lot of open green space, but there are numerous trees all across the sidewalks of the city. Shanghai currently has a district called the French Concession due to the settlement of the French almost a hundred years ago. Whenever the French were here, they designed their area of the city to Euro-French standards. Their settlement included many Renaissance style buildings and a special type of French tree. This type of tree was planted all across the French Concession and it is a perfect indicator of whether you are in the French Concession or not. This tree is called the “London Plane Tree“ and the trunk has a distinguishable body that has different hues.
