Mushrooms and Nature in Finland

Introduction:

Finnish people are very in touch with nature. For how big the country of Finland is, there is not a very large population. This means that there is plenty of space to roam. In Finland, the laws surrounding ownership of property are not as strict as in the United States. This means Finns can go camping wherever they'd like, pick whatever berries they'd like in the wild, etc. Spending time in nature is intrinsic to Finnish culture!

What does this creature or plant look like?:

This is a mushroom called Kantarelli in Finnish or Chanterelle in English. It is orange and fairly large compared to the type of mushrooms I see in the grocery stores in America.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I didn't personally see this type of mushroom growing in the wild, but I did see them in grocery stores. I was amazed at how orange they were. When I think of mushrooms in my mind, I think of grey and other dull colors. They were so bright!

Where does it live?:

These mushrooms are commonly found in Europe. In Finland, they grow mostly in the summer due to the warmer temperatures.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Mushrooms are a type of fungi that grow on the ground in wooded areas. They have gills that produce microscopic spores that help them spread.
