Food in Taiwan

Introduction:

Before we start getting into some awesome marine biology stuff, I thought that I should share a bit of Taiwan with you. I hope you all like to eat, because Taiwanese food is the perfect introduction to Taiwan! There are a lot of amazing restaurants here, but the most exciting way to eat dinner is to visit a night market. These markets pop up at various places around sunset and stay open until late. Although they may not be permanent structures, the food can be incredible. Some of the stalls at Taiwanese night markets even have Michelin stars (a Michelin Star is awarded to restaurants offering outstanding cooking).

What food did I try?:

Some of the most popular dishes here are braised pork over rice, beef noodles and oyster omelets. Unfortunately, I’m vegetarian, so I can’t enjoy these delicacies, but Taiwan has some great veggie options too. At night markets, I usually eat scallion pancakes with basil and egg, sweet potato balls or stinky tofu (a delicious fermented tofu served with vegetables and spicy sauce which does, in fact, stink!).

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Awesome! Night markets are definitely food-focused, but snacking is not the only thing you can do there. Most night markets include a variety of arcade-style games to play and clothing stores selling cute accessories. They make for a really fun after-school outing with friends.
