Taiwan has one of the best recycling systems in the world. Over 50% of household waste is recycled here! There are a few ways in which Taiwan makes recycling easy. First, there are recycling bins everywhere. At my school, we have seven different bins into which you can sort trash, recycling and food waste. Every public trash can has a public recycling bin right next to it.
Taiwan also encourages reusable plastics. If you want a bag at the grocery store, you have to pay for it, which encourages people to bring reusable bags. If you buy bubble tea or coffee, most cafes and tea shops will give you a discount for bringing a reusable cup. Reducing waste and recycling has become a community responsibility that people take seriously here.
It has been interesting to see how recycling and waste management are addressed here.
In the 1970s, Taiwan was developing really quickly, which also led to garbage piling up really quickly. The landfills became so full that Taiwan was nicknamed the "garbage island." Recycling became a priority, and now, most waste in Taiwan is recycled.
