An Unexpected Math Quiz

Sometimes I have breakfast there. School starts at 8:00 a.m. I get out of school at 5:00 a.m., because I stay for an hour after classes are over."

“My dad or mom takes me,” Jaydan says, as he flips through a Chinese dictionary.

“公交车 (gongjiaoche), my dad takes me on the bus. Then, my mom drives me home.”

Are you allowed to go by yourself?

“No,” he says matter-of-factly.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

"We eat lunch in the classroom."

Do you bring your lunch from home?

“No, I buy lunch at school. My mom pays for one year of lunch.”

“Apples,” he says with a toothy smile.

"Of course we speak in Chinese! 你好 (nihao) is hello."

Oh, of course you speak Chinese. But you take English classes too, right?

"Yeah, every Tuesday."

"No one has the same name. Names in China have special meanings, so not everyone will have the same name."
