Greek Friend

Introduction:

One of the greatest things about living abroad is meeting all sorts of interesting people. I met a girl named Ilia in my classes at the university and she has become one of my best friends here in Rotterdam. I didn't expect to move to the Netherlands and become friends with a bunch of Greek people!

I interviewed her about her daily life back home so that we could all learn a little bit about Greek culture.

What is your full name?:

Ilia Patsali. Its written like "Ίλια Πατσαλή" in Greek.

Where do you live? What is your house like?:

I live in Thessaloniki, which is the second largest city in Greece. It is a port city and it is really beautiful, especially at night because all the lights are on. The city has a special vibe. You can fall in love with it, both the city and the people.

I live in an apartment with my parents and my younger sister. It is an okay-sized apartment for a family of four, but I absolutely love our balcony.

What is your family like?:

I’m pretty close with my family. My relationships changed after I became an adult. I’m 24 and living at home, so my parents have stopped acting like parents and have started becoming more like friends.

In Greece, jobs don’t pay very much so everyone lives at home with their parents. I’m lucky because my parents are great!
