"After school, I like to play with my friends, draw with Tess, or go to the river to bathe, but I usually have to do my chores first."
Context - Bathing in the river is a fairly common practice here. There is water insecurity in my town, so a lot of people (especially those who live with bigger families) conserve water by bathing in the river. The water is very clean, and it is the same water that comes through our faucets when it arrives. So, while it may seem unsanitary if you're not used to it, it's perfectly clean and very refreshing!
"My favorite famous person is Karol G."
Context - Karol G is a reggaeton artist from Colombia whose music has become very popular in the DR.
"I listen to bachata, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and sometimes dembow."
"When I grow up, I want to be a teacher."
Context - It's very common for my students to want to be teachers. Oftentimes, it's one of the few "professional" careers that the kids grow up seeing, and it's one of the best-paid careers here in the DR, relative to others.
"If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to New York."
Context - A lot of Dominicans, when moving to the U.S., move to New York, so there are a lot of people (especially younger kids) who think that New York and the United States are the same.
