There's a Mountain in the Way!

Not only does all this natural beauty allow locals to enjoy the many facets of the city, but it also attracts tourists from across the world. These tourists come and spend their money in Cape Town, boosting the local economy and keeping small businesses in business!

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Cape Town weather is super-unpredictable and can change multiple times in the course of a day because of the the wind patterns, here, which are determined both by the the mountain and the nearby ocean. I carry a rain-jacket in my backpack every day, so I do not get caught unprepared in the unpredictable rain! Often though, the rainy and windy weather will be followed by clear skies and the warm sun just an hour later! This means that people must be prepared at all times and willing to change their plans at the last minute. People who work jobs outdoors often lose business if they cannot sell their goods while it is raining. While this unpredictable weather creates challenges, Capetonians are nothing if not adaptable!

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

When Cape Town was established in 1652, people lived in the area between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. However, as Cape Town grew into what is known as the "Mother City", space for homes and businesses soon ran out, requiring people to move out to the area behind the mountain. The areas behind the mountain are known as the Southern Suburbs, which is where the University of Cape Town is and where I also am located! Now, the city is spread out in a semi-circle shape around the mountain.
