Bulgaria is very small in comparison to other countries. It is around the same size as the state of Tennessee! The population of Bulgaria and Tennessee are also very similar with both having around 7 million people. Many people in Bulgaria live in bigger cities (like Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna), but the rest of the country is spread out. Some older individuals often live in villages located outside of town. With so many people located in smaller towns or isolated areas, there is a need for regular transportation. There are numerous buses and trains that go all over the country! I live in Vidin and most people walk because it is quick and everything is close, but taxis are cheap and provide an easy alternative. On the weekends, I regularly take buses and trains. Buses are newer than the trains, but the trains are cheaper. On the train, you can also walk around, use the restroom and meet new people, which are all great perks. No matter how I travel, it is always an adventure in Bulgaria!
In Vidin, most people walk or take taxis when traveling in the city. However, people usually use trains to travel to and from different cities. It is the cheapest way to travel and there are a lot of trains that run regularly. Many people have cars and drive to their destination.
