The ship stayed in place. We have been drilling for core sediments on the ocean floor and have 12 special propellers on the ship called thrusters that keep the ship in the same location. Since this is a science research vessel, we traveled in an extra special and unique way … we traveled through time! When we drill into the layers of the earth and bring up core samples of the sediments, scientists analyze them to look for secrets about the Earth’s past. Just in the core samples, we took this week, we time-traveled at least 800,000 years into the past!
Since leaving Reykjavik, Iceland, we have sailed 1,721 nautical miles (3,187 km).
By ship and with my feet. My method of travel will be the same for two whole months. The ship is my method of travel, my housing, my restaurant, my office, and a floating laboratory for scientists. Onboard, I get around by using my feet. I packed really good boots that don’t slip easily on the wet decks and stairs of the ship. Since the ship is moving around a lot as well, we have to wear very practical, sturdy shoes. No high heels!
