Interviewing Satwik, My Host Brother

On the second floor is the living room and kitchen, the third floor includes Satwik and my host parents’ rooms and the fourth floor has my room and my hajuraamaa’s room. There’s also a rooftop where one can see my aamaa’s house plants, view the city and do laundry.

What chores do you have at home?:

Satwik doesn’t do any chores at home. He’s usually in charge of taking care of his dog, Julie, by making sure she gets playtime in the house and bathroom time outside of the house.

What jobs do your parents have?:

Satwik's babaa is a retired policeman and an international volleyball player. He also used to work in the US and China. Satwik’s aamaa used to work as a nurse but now stays home and takes care of the house and Satwik.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

According to Satwik, school starts at 8:40 AM but he has to be at the bus stop right outside his house by 7:50 AM. Then, school ends at 3:25 PM and he usually reaches home by the same bus at 4:10 PM.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Satwik gets to school by bus on his own every day.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

On school days, which are six days a week (Sunday through Friday), Satwik eats lunch at school. Lunch at school is dal bhaat every day. His favorite food is laphing, a Tibetan noodle dish, since he loves the spice. Satwik told me that there’s a stereotype about Nepali boys liking spicy foods.
