Bengaluru: The Garbage City

This means that the system is trying to take care of many more people than it’s supposed to.

Another reason the trash problem in Bengaluru is so bad is because many people don’t know about recycling. Even those who do know how to recycle often don’t have a way to recycle. There are no recycling centers or bins that they can easily visit.

Is this need being met? How?:

Work is being done to fix the trash problem in Bengaluru. Apartment complexes have started their own recycling programs. Startup companies like Khalibottle pay people based on how much they recycle.

The city government of Bengaluru is also trying to combat the trash problem by making it illegal to dump garbage on the streets. Stopping people from dumping their garbage is hard. So many people do it! And some organizations are collecting and reusing stuff that would otherwise be thrown away. A nonprofit organization called Stitched to Save Nine takes old clothes and makes bags and backpacks out of them.

Overall, there are many programs in place now that are trying to reduce the amount of trash generated in Bengaluru. These programs only have a small impact so far, but hopefully, over time, their efforts will make a huge difference in reducing the trash problem in Bengaluru.
