Hinduism: A Unique Religion

Introduction:

One thing that makes India so unique is its religious traditions. There are many religions that are practiced in India, but the most common one is Hinduism. Hinduism is more than just a religion in India, though. It’s also a way of life!

What tradition did I learn about?:

Since coming to India I have learned a lot about Hinduism, which is a religion I previously didn’t know much about. Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world though! It’s found primarily in India and in neighboring countries like Nepal and Mauritius.

Hinduism is different from many religions because it has no specific beliefs that everyone must agree with to be considered a Hindu. Instead, it is inclusive of many different, sometimes contradictory, beliefs. Hinduism can mean different things to everyone who practices it. Also, there are many different gods and goddesses that are worshipped in Hinduism. Which god or goddess is most important to a person often depends on where they're from in India. Belief in reincarnation is another characteristic that sets Hinduism apart from most other religions.

Though specific beliefs can vary from person to person, Hinduism has a broad range of values and rituals that people generally follow. Some example values that are important in Hinduism include being honest and patient and not hurting other living beings.
