Our News

visited me this week for 10 days, and we got tickets to see a movie at the movie theater closest to my house. Both our tickets cost only $12,000 pesos, or $3 USD! We also went to two workshops to help English learners with vocabulary about music and colors. In the music class, we raced to name the artists of English songs, and in the colors class, we discussed the feelings and emotions associated with colors while making symbolic watercolor paintings.

What did I read this week?:

This week, I got deeper into reading Tar Baby by Toni Morrison, a famous Black American novelist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature for her novel Beloved. So far, the book is about a white couple, Mr. and Mrs. Street, staying in a home they have on an unnamed Caribbean island. Living with them are two married Black servants, Ondine and Sidney, and a younger girl, Jadine, who is basically their daughter and like a niece to the Streets. The book examines all the characters' reactions when they discover an escaped slave hiding in their house and Mr. Street invites him to stay. I'm really enjoying it so far, and it's incredible how relevant the themes still are in today's political climate and in my current setting, where questions of race, class, gender and language are brought up every day.

What games or sports did I play this week?:

I don't play any sports, but I do go to the gym and practice yoga every day. When I go to my gym, which is called SmartFit, I usually do 30 minutes of some kind of cardio, either on the incline treadmill or the elliptical, while I listen to a true crime podcast.
