Elephants tend to live in the more northern parts of Botswana. This is because the northern parts of the country have more rivers. So, the elephants want to stay closer to areas where they will be able to find water.
Elephants are very smart! In Botswana, it can get very hot. But, an elephant does not have the ability to sweat like people do to stay cool. Instead, elephants take mud baths! They use mud as a natural sunscreen and bug spray. They roll around in the mud and use their trunk to toss mud on their back. Their skin looks thick and tough - but it is actually quite sensitive! Luckily, a thick layer of mud helps protect their skin from sunburns and bug bites.
Elephants are listed as an endangered animal. Sadly, the biggest harm to this animal is people. Unfortunately, people hunt elephants to sell their tusks. But there is hope! In Botswana alone, over 100,000 miles of land are dedicated to wildlife conservation (wildlife conservation is protecting animals and their natural environment). Botswana has many laws that are dedicated to protecting wildlife and ensuring their safety!
