Galicia's frequent rainfalls, especially during the fall and winter, make this area a wonderful place for chestnut trees to grow and flourish.
I am not worried about chestnut trees becoming extinct in Galicia because chestnuts, or castañas, have become a part of the culture here. Castañas were an important part of the Spanish diet before maize, or corn, and potatoes arrived from North America in the 16th century. In mid-November, there are castañadas festivals to celebrate the harvest of chestnuts. During these festivals, people gather to roast chestnuts and enjoy them together.
