The Mangroves and Wetlands of Guayaquil

Introduction:

Ecuador is known for its good weather, nice waters, mountains and animals but, sometimes the weather can make things look a little different. Although, there is sunshine during one half of the year for Guayaquil, rain and humidity dominate the other half. This rainfall can be so bad that it causes flooding. Fortunately, Guayaquil has found great ways to adapt.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Guayaquil has a "tropical savanna climate", which means that both wet and dry seasons exist throughout the year. The tropical savanna climate also means that there are large areas of wetlands and, in Guayaquil, there are several mangrove forests filled with swamps and mangrove trees. With a mean (average) temperature of 77 °F per month and the moisture from the waters in the air, the Guayaquileños (people of Guayaquil) generally experience hot and humid weather conditions all-year round, mostly between May and November. Rain only comes between the months of December and April.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The people of Guayaquil cleared the swamps in the area with land and roads when they were rebuilding the city. Without the swamps, the environments are cleaner for homes and businesses alike.
