Patriotism is a word used to say how much someone admires their country. Do you have a strong love for the United States of America? Well, every Ecuadorian has a heart that flutters and skips to the beat of their country’s song just like we do. With shiny marble statues all over the city, parades of people in bands and poster projects, you can sense this proud feeling country-wide.
The country of Ecuador has many traditions and ceremonies but, they show the most joy when looking back on their independence. They also love to express their individual cultures even inside of a country that is so small. This is why the cities all have their own flag. Guayaquil was the first to gain independence and all of the cities followed right behind them. They have a tradition of telling this wonderful story over and over. One day, I went to a parade downtown and to my surprise, people were marching for a festival of Ecuador’s culture. There were men, women and children dressed in the traditional clothing of the post-colonial times.
There are also many monuments that teach about people that helped win their independence from Spain. Taking a walk to the park down the street from my home, I saw a large marble monument with many flags. It had the flag of other countries in South America, such as Colombia and Venezuela.
