In Dakar, people use the CFA franc, which is an abbreviation for Communiauté Financiere Africaine. On world currency markets, the CFA is also abbreviated XOF. When you refer to the money in everyday speech, you call it "Ceefa." It is important to carry cash with you because there are not a lot of places to use a credit or debit card. As a comparison, $1 USD = 597 XOF. If you are just estimating, you can generally figure $2 USD for every 1000 XOF note.
Water here can be bought by the individual bottle for about 250 XOF ($0.42 USD). More commonly, people buy small plastic bags of water for about 50 XOF each ($0.01). I save money by buying a 10-liter bottle for 1000 XOF ($1.75) for drinking water in my home.
The yassa ginnaar I shared with my neighbors. Yassa ginnaar is a dish made with yassa (onions cooked in pepper, lemon juice and salt) and ginnaar (chicken) which is stuffed with herbs and roasted. Usually it comes on white rice, but this time the yassa ginnaar was served over fragrant saffron rice. Delicious!
