After a 15 hour bus ride to the Northern Region of Ghana, I arrived at Mole National Park, which is home to all kinds of beautiful animals that are native to Ghana. I was most excited to see the savannah elephants and they were not hard to find!
These elephants have very large ears that wiggle and flap to signal what they are feeling. If an elephant feels threatened, it will open it's ears wide. If it's feeling satisfied while eating, it will flap them open and closed. They also have long tusks on both sides of their trunks.
I was amazed by their size and beauty when I first saw them. They moved very slowly and didn't seem bothered by the people watching them. We had to keep our distance from them to respect their space. These animals are so peaceful that I wondered why anyone would ever want to try to disturb them.
Savannah elephants live in Sub-Saharan Africa, which includes Ghana. They are not everywhere in Ghana though. I had to travel very far to visit them! Their ecosystem is called the savanna, which has a mix of very dry and lush green areas.
