Back in California, I use public buses or my own vehicle to get around town. Since I am in a big city in Ghana, there are main roads and highways that can be used by all kinds of cars. People who do not drive their own cars could call taxis or use tro-tros, large vans that have been transformed into bus-like vehicles. Accra’s roads are very busy and difficult to navigate, but these options of transportation make it easier for people to get around.
Some people in Ghana own cars and others use public transportation or taxis and Uber, which can be quite expensive. Taxis often honk to get people’s attention and people point to the ground right in front of them to show the driver they need their services. In NYC, you raise your hand in the air to signal that you want to hail a cab, right? For ordering an Uber, another type of taxi service, people use an app on their phone to book it from the comfort of their homes or offices.
A more economical option is to take a tro-tro, which are more popular, in my opinion. A tro-tro is a large van that has a driver and a mate or conductor who collects money and calls out stops. This van can seat about 18 people! They run similar to a bus system and cover the city pretty well. Since these vans do not have bus numbers, like the ones in the U.S.
